Lap en Lint Borduurgenot is a small, family-run business founded and owned by Monica Cassell. I wear many hats here — owner, consultant, embroiderer, and all-round helper. My wonderful family — my husband, son, daughter, and son-in-law — helped me get started, and they continue to lend a hand whenever needed.
My love for needlework wasn’t always there. When my children were born, I decided to try sewing clothes for them — sweatshirts, pants, waistcoats — and even a few skirts for myself. For a while, it was wonderful… until, suddenly, my inspiration disappeared. I gave away all my materials and patterns, stored the sewing machine in a cupboard, and thought I was done for good. My mother used to tell me, “Go to the fabric shop, touch the materials — the feeling will come back.” But it didn’t — not right away.
Then in 2003, everything changed. I wandered into a wool shop and saw a group of people — ten ladies and a gentleman — joyfully working on ribbon and thread embroidery. I was amazed at the beauty they created with simple ribbons and thread. That’s when I found my creative spark again — on a whole new level. My husband encouraged me and helped me get started with all the essentials. I soon completed 14 embroidered pieces, keeping a few for myself and gifting the rest to friends and family.
In 2007, I had the pleasure of meeting Di van Niekerk, a renowned embroidery artist and author of many beloved embroidery books. She kindly invited me to assist her and her team at the Hobby-X exhibition in Fourways. It was an incredibly busy few days — but I enjoyed every moment! That experience inspired me to officially register Lap en Lint Borduurgenot in 2008. Over the years, I’ve made many wonderful friends through this craft.
By 2009, I decided to expand into machine embroidery. I began with an Elna 8300, later upgrading to a Brother Innovis V3. Eventually, I invested in a 15-needle embroidery machine — and I’ve been thrilled ever since (though sometimes it feels like 15 needles still aren’t enough!).
While I continue to offer ribbons, books, and designs from Di van Niekerk, DMC threads, as well as ribbons and threads from House of Embroidery, my main focus today is on machine embroidery. I especially love creating burp cloths, towels, and cuddle pillows.
I’m proud to have built a loyal customer base both locally and abroad. Many of my clients order gifts for expectant mothers abroad. I also provide embroidery for two preschools twice a year — so things can get wonderfully busy around here.
Every stitch I create is made with care and passion, and I truly hope you’ll find something here that brings you joy.
Well, it didn't end by machine and hand embroidery, there is even a baby accessories page and I'm also planning to do a destash page where we will get rid of 'stuff' thats filling up usable space. Keep your eyes peeled.
More products will be available soon.
Warm regards,
Monica Cassell
